This historic map of Melanesia appeared in Volume III of Domeny di Rienzi's 1836 work, Océanie ou Cinquième Partie du Monde. Drawn by the French geographer Thunot Duvotenay (1796-1875), the map labels Indonesia as Malaisie (Malaysia). Contrary to current usage, Australia is included in Melanesia and Fiji is called the "Grand Archipel Melano-Polynesien". The location of the various island groups is remarkably accurate for the time.
